Which Cell Phone Company is Winning the Smartphone War

Mid-market Smartphones Battle for Users

Smartphones are set to become more sophisticated this year, with manufacturers competing to capture the middle-market, according to an industry expert.

Following a recent survey by Futuresource Consulting that found more than one billion people will own a smartphone by 2013, Mobile Gazette has predicted that mid-market phones are going to have more advanced features.

Conrad Longmore, editor at Mobile Gazette, said: "Samsung's Bada platform also looks to push smartphone capabilities to mid-range devices.

"So, it is likely that 2010 will see mid-market handsets becoming progressively smarter and they will offer features that would previously have been restricted to high-end phones."

Last week the Finnish manufacturer Nokia announced plans to offer free satellite navigation on its range of smartphones, a formerly paid-for service from its recent $8.1 billion acquisition of NavTeq.

It is one blow in the increasingly competitive mid-market smartphone market, with Nokia effectively undercutting its biggest rival Apple, whose iPhone users currently pay around $70 to use a similar application from TomTom.
