Social media has rocked the world of business and marketing and changed how things are done.
However, it is surprising how many people do not take advantage of the multiple channels available to them to become engaged with their audience.
If you’re thinking “oh no, I’m one of those people,” not to worry. Not only are you in good company, but you are in a good position as any to jump right in to the world of social media.
More than likely, if you’re in this position, it’s because you have no idea where to start and unaware of the benefits and opportunities waiting. Well I’m here to tell you the benefits are numerous and the barriers to entry are few. Here are a few ways to grow your online presence and join the social media conversation that seems to be passing you by.
Blogs
Whether you are an individual looking to get your name out there or a business trying to build brand awareness, a blog is a good place to build content you will later promote using other social media channels. This is where you will house the majority of your message content.
It is a hard fact that no social media outreach will go anywhere without a solid base of meaningful content. For example, Dell does a great job of engaging their consumers through their online blog; they write posts on products, how to use them, and even allow consumers to provide feedback which they then use for improving future products.
If you are a company with a direct-to-consumer product, consider using this technique. If you are a business-to-business company or an individual, you may want to take the approach of becoming a thought leader on certain concepts related to your business interests.
Twitter, Facebook and Beyond...
Once you have your blog up and running and filled with intriguing content, which can be expanded upon, social media is the next step. Outlets such as Twitter and Facebook are a great way to spread your content and get people participating in the conversation.
But before you go spreading your content everywhere, you need to find out who might actually want to read it. On the more traditional side, this would be the process of figuring out your target audience. It is the same for social media. If you already know who your audience is, or who you want them to be, you then need to find out where they live on the internet.
It is fairly easy to find where the majority of your target audience lives and plays online. Once this is done, you will want to start by engaging with them. One way to engage is to leave comments on blog posts and forums they might read or write. When you have this mastered, you can then move to introducing your own relevant online information. If the information you introduce is in line with the conversation already occurring on the internet, readers will migrate easily to your conversation space, allowing you to take the reigns and guide the conversation while also gaining valuable feedback from potential customers.
The details of growing your online presence might seem gritty at first, but once you commit to a voice, listen to current voices, and add yours gradually and tastefully, the details will come together to build a very strong, yet approachable brand.
