Business Travel can be very expensive but with a little extra planning there are a lot of easy ways to cut costs. With advance booking you can often save money on airline flights, hotels and car rentals. For instance, if one were to book a flight leaving tomorrow from Los Angeles International to New York City it would cost $700 but purchasing just a week in advance can save over $300. The same rules apply for hotel accommodations, a little advance can save you tons. When renting a car an easy way to cut costs is by booking online, even if it is for the same day. If you call or walk up for a car rental the charge can be as much as $40 per day more expensive. I learned this the hard way.

One way to save on your stay is to consider renting an apartment instead of a hotel. On a recent trip to London we rented a one bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, dishwasher and laundry all located in our suite for less than a cramped hotel room. We spent 5 days in the apartment for only $600. We saved even more by cooking many of our meals and having the ability to do laundry. If you are travelling with a group considering looking for a rental house instead of doubling up in hotel rooms. In Los Angeles, for example, we were able to find a 3 bedroom house available to rent by week. Not only does it save money, it's a lot more comfortable.

Renting a car instead of relying on cab services can cut costs a lot. Picking the car up from the airport will also save you the cost of shuttle or car service which are often $40 or more plus tip. If you do plan on using the shuttle, sign up for their frequent user card. Also take advantage of frequent flier programs. These are little things that are often overlooked that can really add up.

There are a lot of small ways your money can be saved on a business trip. Instead of grabbing a snack from the minibar in your hotel room, walk to a local gas station. Make sure to fill up your rental car before turning it back in. Some car rental services will charge up to $7 a gallon if they have to refill it for you. If you are on a short stay try to fit into carryon luggage since many airlines charge extra fees for checked baggage now.

Technology is such an important part of the work place today. Make sure that you look for places that offer free internet services. If that is unavailable, check with your cell phone provider. Your cell phone can often tether to your laptop and be used as the internet service. This can save you a daily fee at your hotel or if you are in a bind somewhere without access.
