The Nissan Leaf has been named as the winner of the Green Car Journal's 2010 Green Car Vision Award.

The coveted prize, which is given out to the most innovative eco-friendly vehicle in the early stages of mass-production, was given out at the Washington Auto Show, with the publication's judging panel praising the Japanese manufacturer's focus on making it affordable as well as energy efficient.

Notably, the cost of both buying and running the Leaf battery electric car will be comparable to that of an internal combustion-driven model, with Green Car Journal editor and publisher Ron Cogan calling this a "significant" development in the eco-friendly motoring sector.

"This coming electric model will provide the features, the styling, and the driving experience that will meet the needs of a sophisticated and demanding market, while producing zero localized emissions and requiring no petroleum fuels," he said.

Also in the running for this year's award were the Ford Focus BEV electric vehicle and the Mercedes Benz F, which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Meanwhile, Vauxhall is gearing up to launch its energy-efficient Astra Ecoflex, which the maker claims is 12 per cent more fuel-efficient than the standard model.
