Determining whether or not you should purchase life insurance is a huge decision for anyone to make. You need to evaluate the situation carefully and determine if life insurance is right for you. While it can be a useful tool for your family to use to cover expenses and help your family remain stable financially, clearly the purchase of life insurance is not for everyone. One of the biggest reasons people skip out on life insurance is the financial burden it may place on them. If you decide that you can financially afford to buy life insurance, but aren’t sure whether taking out a policy would be the best thing for you are your family, consider these pros and cons.

Family

One of the most common reasons that people purchase a life insurance policy is that they want their spouse and children to be taken care of once they have passed away. Some people consider using life insurance money to provide for people outside of their immediate circle, such as nieces or nephews, siblings, friends or neighbors. It is important to understand that the insurance money is yours to give to anyone you wish. So, decide first of all, who would you want to inherit your life insurance money. Then consider whether or not these individuals actually need financial support, or are if they financially secure on their own. Many people do not have children or a spouse who would benefit from a life insurance policy. In this case, maybe a policy would not be beneficial for you.

Debt

Another reason many people take out a life insurance policy is to pay off the debt they have accrued in their lifetime. Many people still have mortgages or other large loans. This is one large reason to take out a policy. Many times your beneficiaries will be left with the outstanding bills from your life. You should take a look at your finances and establish whether or not the debt you have taken on is able to be handled easily by your family or your estate. If your debt is large, life insurance may be a route you look into taking, so as not to leave a huge financial burden on your family.

Funeral expenses

Many people would prefer to handle funeral arrangements themselves. As the costs for a burial rises, it would be a good idea for you to set aside some money to help pay for the final expenses. This is a compelling argument for anyone who wishes to take out at least a small life insurance policy to cover these bare essentials.

Funerals can be expensive, and that is yet another reason that many people choose to buy life insurance. The rising cost of funeral services can create an immense financial strain for your loved ones.

Financial concerns

The biggest decision to make is whether or not you can afford life insurance. If you are financially strapped yourself, and are not leaving behind many dependents or debts, then perhaps life insurance is not for you. Consider the pros and cons fully before deciding to purchase a life insurance policy.
