It is essential to go through the required legal processes of importing a creature into a country if it is to be covered by pet insurance, it has been asserted.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) explains that pet insurance will not cover animals if the necessary procedures have not been followed.

And this could have a further impact on household finances if incidents relating to the pet are not covered by other forms of insurance.

For instance, ABI claims that damage caused by pets is typically not covered by home insurance.

Similarly, leaving the door open for an animal to come and go as it pleases could also affect home insurance protection.

As such, ABI recommends that houses are made safe first and foremost if a new pet is being brought into the family.

When choosing what type of animal to keep, families are warned that exotic pets typically cost more to purchase.

This in turn drives up the cost of pet insurance for the animal, on top of any legal costs or fees relating to quarantine periods when it is first imported.

However, parents looking for the perfect pet for their offspring might consider the extra expenditure to be worthwhile to provide their youngsters with an animal that meets their needs.
